This study, directed by Catherine Ratelle, in collaboration with Stéphane Duchesne, André Plamondon, David Litalien, and Julien Bureau from the Education Faculty at Université Laval, focuses on parental psychological needs in supporting their child’s schooling.

It initially received funding from the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et Culture (FRQSC) as part of the concerted action program on educational perseverance and success. Additional funding was later provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to continue the project.

The first objective is to identify the determinants of parental psychological needs in the context of supporting their child’s schooling.

The second objective is to describe sources of psychological need satisfaction and frustration and their role in predicting the quality of parental involvement throughout their child’s primary school education.

Phase 2 - Quantitative

A province-wide longitudinal survey study was conducted by having parents of elementary school students fill an online questionnaire to validate and generalize the findings from Phase 1. This phase aims to describe parental needs satisfaction and frustration, identify the determinants of parental needs, and assess their contribution to the quality of parents’ involvement in their child’s schooling.
